Evaluation for Frankenstein
During the show, I was working back stage to ensure that the actors had everything they needed for the show. I also did the makeup for both monsters during the matinee show as well as some costume fixing as I had brought in my sewing kit in case there were any costume malfunctions or changes to be made. I helped the actors change into their costumes during the quick costume change scene and I set allocated dressing rooms so the actors would feel comfortable changing. I also made sure that the actors were in the right locations at times so they would not miss their cues. Furthermore, I helped actors with lines backstage and offered emotional support by motivating the actors before and after the show. These were the things that went well related to my production role.
Unfortunately, some things did not go so well and are important to review so the same issues wont arise again next time. I created several different group chats for communication within the team. However, due to the immaturity of some students the group chats were unsuccessful. This is because some members of the team displayed a inappropriate attitude causing conflict. I sought advice from more experienced members at college who suggested I use a more professional approach by using email as my method of communication. The team were dismissive of this but I would prefer to use this method in the future since it allows me to have written evidence of tasks allocated and any general discussions between others so that I can go back to it.
After having issues with communication, I decided to get the technical directors phone number so we could communicate about the technical aspects of the production. We agreed that he would come in every Friday to talk to the Lighting and Sound team about their ideas. This worked quite well as we did eventually have some ideas such as using gobos and UV lighting during some of the scenes.
I did my best to ensure that members of the team knew what they were responsible for. I suggested that people who had a idea will be responsible to completing tasks related to that idea, such as searching for makeup. Planning and delegating tasks went well as it was easy for me to make sure that the work load was fair for everyone. However, what did not go well was people sticking to deadlines we had set. Communication could have been a lot better, where they could have told me why there was a delay or why they were having difficulties completing their tasks. I was able to step-up in the last minute by bringing in clothes of my own to be used as costumes, thinking that it would be a good back-up but at the end we used many of the makeup and costume I had brought in.
Overall, I truly believe that the show could have been much better but defiance from various students and lack of communication made it difficult. I believe I tried my hardest to ensure the show went ahead alongside the director and the technical team but this was very challenging. My production team were very argumentative which often lead in things not being completed by the deadline, leaving everything to the last minute. Despite that, I learnt a lot more about the role of a production manager and also the difficulties people face in the performing arts industry. However, despite the large amount of stress this role caused me I would be willing to do something like this again. This role has opened my mind to more jobs inside the performance industry, such as theatrical makeup which I am now considering as a possible future career as I love experimenting with makeup and I've always admired the amounts of talent taken to create amazing sfx pieces.
